In the ever-changing landscape of pop culture where viral moments just come and go, the rise of BINI as the defining girl group of their generation is arguably one of the biggest moments of OPM in 2024. Today, all eight members are some of the most followed artists in the scene. They burst into the spotlight just as audiences craved unapologetic authenticity in the artists they stan—and BINI is now poised and polished for what lies ahead.

Needless to say, the journey of Aiah, Colet, Maloi, Gwen, Stacey, Mikha, Jhoanna, and Sheena. from eager teens in the back of audition lines to pop idols at the forefront of the industry is truly a modern-day phenomenon. The massive success of “Pantropiko” paved the way for these aspiring idols to become household names after they dominated social media, scored millions of TikTok posts, and spawned an array of photo cards. When their vibrant single became the summer anthem of the year, BINI finally gained the hard-earned recognition they deserved.

Behind their current chart-topping songs, sold-out performances, and growing list of endorsements, however, lies a story of sheer grit and unshakeable resilience.

Before they became the faces of OPM today, BINI was just a group of young women answering ABS-CBN’s call for aspiring talents. Aiah, Colet, Maloi, Gwen, Stacey, Mikha, Jhoanna, and Sheena were naturally gifted performers, discovered by the discerning eyes of the network’s entertainment veterans.

They were still unpolished gems yet their potential set them apart; thus, they were handpicked to become the one-of-a-kind jewels they are today. And in the same way diamonds can only be made under pressure, BINI, too, had to prove themselves to their coaches, mentors, and, finally, the public.

But when the eight-member ensemble finally completed their grueling idol training, they faced one of the most challenging periods in the entertainment industry and the world. Their pre-debut single “Da Coconut Nut” launched at the height of a global health crisis, not to mention ABS-CBN’s network shutdown, so they weren’t met with the usual fanfare of screaming fans and flashing cameras. Instead, they were “pandemic idols,” relying on raw talent, unbridled ambition, and endless social media livestreams to reach their audience.

Between leaving loved ones behind, staying locked in for training, finding their footing as a group, and waiting for that big break, these young ladies soldiered through the toughest days with a common passion and a shared dream.

OPM powerhouse

Now, approaching four years since their official debut, Born to Win, BINI has become an OPM powerhouse. Known for their show-stopping performances, signature kanal humor, and trendsetting style, they’ve risen in the ranks as the Nation’s Girl Group.

While most girl groups are packaged under a singular concept, BINI has carved out a space of their own by embracing each one’s uniqueness. Jhoanna’s electric confidence, Gwen’s fierce energy, Stacey’s girly toughness, Maloi’s quirky cuteness, Aiah’s queenly command, Colet’s fiery attitude, Mikha’s too-cool-for-school nonchalance, and Sheena’s “bunso”-coded charm all contribute to the group’s diverse yet harmonious identity.

Each member brings her own flair to the table through vocals, choreography, and wardrobe, ensuring that everything they do complements not just BINI as a whole, but also who they are as individuals.

Fashion-forward phenoms

In the eras that followed their debut, style became central to BINI’s journey as pop idols. From their earlier days of just “borrowing everything” they wore to their current status as emerging fashion icons, their evolving look can be considered a reflection of their personal growth and their journey as artists.

As they continue to shatter glass ceilings in music, BINI is also proving that style is a powerful instrument for storytelling—and they’re writing their own rules. Their bold, fashion-forward choices have inspired numerous trends this year alone, extending their influence beyond the music scene and positioning them as cultural icons who represent what’s to come for both OPM and Filipino fashion.

In an industry that often gravitates towards a certain mold, the members of BINI have stayed true to themselves by championing authenticity and individuality, proving these qualities crucial to their success.

Perhaps their most significant impact lies in how they set out not just to make music and perform, but to become role models to the next generation—ultimately, redefining what it means to be a binibini in the Philippines.

In its 35th anniversary special print issue, METRO takes a closer look at each member’s personal journey and individual style philosophies as modern-day Filipina idols. Dressed in the latest from Louis Vuitton F/W 2024 and the iconic Monogram Collection, BINI continues to show the world that they are not just a local girl group. They are part of a global movement.
