MANILA -- Filipino pole vaulter EJ Obiena is looking forward to the rest of the season after his campaign in the 2024 Paris Olympics, where he finished fourth in his event.

Obiena, who is currently ranked second in the world behind Olympic champion Armand Duplantis of Sweden, just missed out on the podium in the Summer Games after thrice failing to clear the 5.95-meter mark at the Stade de France.

He has since returned to training, telling fans in a social media post that he intends to "attack the rest of the season and make you proud."

"I just want to say thank you so much for everyone," Obiena said in an interview on Wednesday. "All the medalists deserve the support, and I am very grateful to be in such a position as myself."

"I will keep doing my best," he added. "The season is not over. There are still a few competitions for me to take part this year, and hopefully I'd be able to retain my world ranking."

Asked when he will start training for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, Obiena says he remains focused on the current season.

"I still need to focus first on the season that I have so we’ll see, we’ll see," he said.

Meanwhile, the local government of Manila awarded P500,000 to Obiena also on Wednesday, as an incentive for his performance in the Paris Games.

"Our Manileño pole vaulter from Tondo and fellow Thomasian is proudly and joyfully welcomed in the country’s capital now that he is back home with his family, friends, and neighbors," said Manila Mayor Dr. Honey Lacuna-Pangan in a statement.

"EJ Obiena gave us and the world a thrilling performance as he cleared bar after raised bar. It was not meant to be now. But our hearts were filled with pride for the sportsmanship EJ showed as he applauded, along with the tens of thousands in the stadium, Sweden’s Armand Duplantis' new world record and new Olympic record of 6.25 meters," she added. -- reports from Willard Cheng and Paige Javier, ABS-CBN News
