MANILA -- Heads up, badminton players!

The Philippine Badminton Association (PBAD) announced Tuesday the upcoming Philippine Badminton Open 2024 -- a local tilt that aims to identify possible candidates for the national team.

"This tournament is a Super 500 tournament, meaning it will have huge implications not just in the national rankings but also [would] identify who can be part of the national team," Melvin Nubla, PBAD Head of Development said.

The tourney will take place on June 5-11 at two different venues.

The qualifying and semifinal rounds will be held at the First Pacific Leadership Academy in Antipolo on June 5-10, while the final is slated on the last day at the Gameville Ballpark in Mandaluyong.

Vice President of the Philippine Badminton Association Jude Turcuato said the contest will narrow down the best badminton players in the country.

"The Philippine Badminton Open is the tournament that proves who the best of the best in the country is," Turcuato, also the Executive Director of MVP Sports Foundation, said.

The badminton competition will feature five different categories: men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles.

A P1-million prize pool will be spread across winners -- in the singles categories, champs will receive P100,000, P50,000 for the runner-up, and P15,000 for the third and fourth-placers.

In the doubles tournaments, champions will take home P120,000, runners-up P60,000, and third and fourth-placers P30,000 each.

In the previous edition, Marc Velasco and Mika De Guzman won the singles competitions. Solomon Padiz Jr. and Julius Villabrille stunned their way to the men’s doubles crown while Nicole Albo and Lea Inlayo dominated the girls’ doubles tournament. Villabrille and Albo also won the mixed doubles tournament.
