Baguio, Metro Manila wake up to coldest morning yet this amihan season

MANILA — Baguio City and Metro Manila on Tuesday recorded their coldest temperatures yet this 2024-2025 northeast monsoon or Amihan season, PAGASA said.

The state weather bureau said the summer capital chilled to 11.8 degrees Celsius while the temperature in Science Garden, Quezon City dropped to 20.4 degrees Celsius.

The current coldest record this Amihan season was observed in La Trinidad, Benguet on January 26 at 9.4 degrees Celsius. The area posted 9.6 degrees Celsius on Tuesday.

Other PAGASA stations that posted temperatures below 20 degrees Celsius included:

  • 18.4°C Calayan, Cagayan
  • 18.4°C Tanay, Rizal
  • 18.7°C Sinait, Ilocos Sur
  • 18.8°C Abucay, Bataan
  • 19.4°C Casiguran, Aurora
  • 19.5°C Malaybalay City
  • 19.7°C Iba, Zambales

The lowest temperature in the country was 6.3 degrees Celsius recorded in Baguio City on January 18, 1961 while the coldest in Metro Manila was 14.5 degrees Celsius observed in Port Area, Manila on January 11, 1914.

The current Amihan surge is seen to weaken before the weekend but a new surge is expected next week.

Apart from nippy weather, the Amihan also brings light to occasionally moderate rains over parts of Northern Luzon and rough to very rough sea conditions not safe for small sea vessels in Ilocos provinces and Cagayan Valley.
