MANILA — Malacañang on Monday welcomed the Philippines’ improved ranking in the 2025 World Press Freedom Index by the Reporters Without Borders.

The Philippines jumped from 134th to 116th out of 180 countries in the 2025 World Press Freedom Index — its highest ranking in 21 years.

“Yes, definitely that’s good news. The President is delighted with that latest ranking of the Philippines relation to its upholding the press freedom, okay. It shows that the President respects one’s rights of expression and the responsible journalism,” Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said in a briefing.

According to Castro, the Philippines’ ranking showed that the country is “not gearing towards dictatorship.”

“So, ito po ay maganda po na naipapakita ng Pangulo na the President is not gearing towards dictatorship. Malaya po ang pamamahayag na nakikita po natin sa kasalukuyan,” she said.
