MANILA - (UPDATE) Securities and Exchange Commission commissioner Blas James Viterbo has resigned from his post, officials said Friday.

Viterbo resigned due to health reasons, SEC Chairperson Teresita Herbosa said. Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez confirmed the resignation separately.

"He is prioritizing his medical check up since he has irregular heartbeat," Herbosa said.

Viterbo, a corporate and tax lawyer, assumed his post as SEC commissioner in may 2014. He also served in the board of state-run Development Bank of the Philippines.

Viterbo was not involved in the SEC's decision to revoke the business papers of news website Rappler due to alleged violation of foreign ownership restrictions, Herbosa said.

Herbosa said Viterbo is related to a "major stockholder" of a media company that she did not name.
