MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – Distinguished volleyball coach Sinfronio "Sammy" Acaylar has passed away on Thursday.

According to a news release by the Premier Volleyball League (PVL), Acaylar succumbed to cardiac arrest at 1:30 a.m. after being confined at the Perpetual Help Medical Center in Las Piñas City.

Earlier this week, Acaylar suffered a stroke on Monday, January 27, which led to his hospitalization. Friends and colleagues rushed him to the hospital after he developed a fever that morning, but despite medical efforts, he passed away in the early hours of Thursday.

Acaylar left a legacy in Philippine volleyball, specifically in the NCAA, where he steered the Perpetual Altas men’s volleyball team to 14 championship titles—a record unmatched in the league’s history.

"Coach Sammy was not just coach of the UPHSD Men’s Volleyball Team, he was the heart and soul of the program. He was a beloved mentor and friend to some of the best men’s volleyball players in the country," the school said in a statement.

Acaylar was also a former coach of the men's national volleyball team which won the bronze medal in the 1991 Southeast Asian Games in Kuala Lumpur.
