MANILA (UPDATED) - The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has announced a 50% fare discount for students using the LRT-1, LRT-2, and MRT-3.

DOTr Secretary Vince Dizon said students only need to present a valid ID within the current school year or proof of enrollment at the ticket counter to avail of the discount. Students taking post-graduate studies can also avail of the discount.

“Yung dating 20 percent discount lang sa estudyante ay inutos ng ating Pangulo na gawing 50 percent. Tuloy-tuloy na ito… Every day of the week, Monday to Sunday, pati holidays kasama rin,” he told reporters.

But he noted that the discount applies to single-journey tickets for now.

“Technically hindi pa kaya nung beep card na i-program sa ngayon pero pinipilit natin siguro in the next few months e magagawan ng paraan,” he said.

The DOTr launched the program at the Antipolo Station of the LRT-2, where students make up 40 percent of daily passengers.

Based on the Light Rail Transit Authority’s (LRTA) estimates, students who commute to school five times a week can now save about P170 per week and P680 per month.

Grade 12 student Michelle Chucas welcomed the news, saying this will allow her to buy other school requirements without having to ask for more money from her parents.

“Siyempre pag paulit-ulit, parang, nakakahiya na rin na, ‘ay mama pahingi ng ganyan’… Lalo na pag nakikita mo silang naghihirap, sobrang budgeted, nakikita mo sila nagca-calculator na kung kaya pa ba, tapos hindi na nila kayang mabili yung kailangan nila,” she said.

Dizon said the discounted rides will be subsidized by the government.

“Ang revenue loss sa LRT-2, since marami dito estudyante talaga mga P600,000 a day… It’s really just going to be shouldered by the government. At the end of the day, the taxpayers still pay for this pero mabuti na rin kasi at least diretso sa bulsa ng mga estudyante natin at mga pamilya nila yung benepisyo. Walang leakage, diretsong tulong ito,” he said.
