MANILA (UPDATED) — The Magnolia Hotshots celebrated the PBA's 50th anniversary in triumphant fashion.

Led by Zav Lucero and Ian Sangalang, the Chito Victolero-coached squad dumped the Converge FiberXers, 83-71, in their Season 49 Philippine Cup faceoff, Tuesday evening at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum in Manila.

"We always want to have fresh legs, and we want our veterans to have fresh legs para down the stretch, we can go to them," said Victolero during the postgame presser, saying how they want their young stars and veterans to compliment each other throughout the contest.

"Credit to our young players, they are embracing kung ano yung sistema namin ngayon. I think, nagwo-work naman," he added.

Lucero shone anew, putting up 18 points, five rebounds, two assists, and two blocks to help Magnolia improve to 2-0, while Sangalang scored the same amount with nine boards and four dimes.

Only a five-point contest midway through the fourth canto, 67-62, Sangalang and Lucero scored four straight points for Magnolia to push their cushion to nine.

Rome Dela Rosa's deuce later at the 3:21 mark then allowed the Hotshots to lead 76-65, and his spurt in the fourth continued further as he then drained a trey with only 54 seconds left for an 81-69 advantage.

Dela Rosa finished with nine, while another Hotshot in Russel Escoto delivered and stood out by contributing 11 markers in their win.

On the other hand, Converge, which leaned on Schonny Winston and Justin Arana, fell to 1-2 in the team standings.
