MANILA — Filipino Olympians will be given a heroes' welcome by Malacañang when they return to the Philippines on Tuesday evening, the Office of the President announced Monday.

The Philippines is coming off a historic stint in the 2024 Paris Olympics, where national athletes produced two golds and two bronzes.

Two-time Olympic gold medalist Carlos Yulo, bronze medalists Nesthy Petecio and Aira Villegas, and the rest of the Filipino Olympic athletes are scheduled to arrive from Paris around 6 p.m., Tuesday, via a chartered flight where they will be received by their families at the Maharlika Presidential Hangar at the Villamor Air Base in Pasay City.

They will then proceed to the Malacanang Palace where they will be received by the President and the First Lady for an awarding ceremony and dinner reception, Chief of Presidential Protocol Reichel Quiñones said in a Palace briefing.

The Malacanang official says Tuesday's homecoming will be "simple, but meaningful."

"The peg for it, for the organizing committee, is we want it to be a Heroes' welcome and it's very much focused on them and what they have done to honor the nation," Quiñones said.

"There will be an awarding ceremony at the Palace to confer certain awards that the President has the right to give."

Quiñones says Yulo will be awarded a Presidential medal of merit, while the rest of the athletes, including Petecio and Villegas, will be presented a Presidential Citation during the event.

"The President will be announcing the cash incentive upon the welcome honors for the Olympians," PCO Assistant Secretary Dale De Vera meanwhile said. "The President will be announcing the figures tomorrow."

Quiñones also clarified reports that the Palace did not invite Carlos Yulo's family for the welcome, saying that it was up to the athletes to decide who they wanted to be there.

"Just to be very clear about it, what we provided is that each athlete was allowed to invite 4 members, either their family, close ones, etc. We left it entirely to them," the official said. "So whoever is part of that welcome is who the athletes want to be there."

"We told them that they could have a plus 4 and we left it up to them," while also sharing that she does not yet know who Yulo invited for the event.

The athletes will also have a homecoming parade on Wednesday afternoon, August 14.

The 7.7-kilometer motorcade, which was initially scheduled on Tuesday, will start at 3 p.m. at the Aliw Theater and will end at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex.

"The parade will start from Aliw Theater, left turn to Roxas Boulevard and then, right turn to P. Burgos straight ahead to Finance Road, until it reaches Taft Avenue, then right turn to Quirino Avenue up to Adriatico Street, and it will end up in the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex," De Vera said.

The event will be live-streamed by RTVM, he added.
