"One of the greatest factors in this election is the heat index. Indeed, it's true... Talagang sobrang init po kanina... However, It cannot be denied, they trooped to the precincts, hindi po namin inaasahan na talagang ganon kadami," Comelec chairman George Garcia said in a press conference an hour before the voting ended.

Some 68.43 million Filipinos were expected to cast their votes in the midterm elections.

Garcia said that historically, voter turnout during the midterm polls was 63 to 65 percent, but he said that something was "different" this year and this may reflect in the official figure in the coming days.

Weather bureau Pagasa said the heat index on election day peaked at 47 degree Celcius recorded in Daet, Camarines Norte and Dagupan City.
