Cody Rhodes, much like last year, saw himself in a prime position to win the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship against Roman Reigns midway through their WrestleMania XL bout at the Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

"The American Nightmare" just hit two consecutive "Cross Rhodes" on the "Tribal Chief," but again, much like last WM39, Reigns’ cousin Solo Sikoa was there to spoil Cody’s party.

This was all legal in Reigns and Rhodes II, which saw the two protagonists compete under "Bloodline Rules."

After Reigns and Dwyane "The Rock" Johnson — who made his triumphant return to the WWE earlier this year as the "Final Boss" — defeated Rhodes and Seth Rollins in the main event of WM40 Night 1, Cody and Roman’s fight was set to be under "Bloodline Rules," or to put it simply, no disqualifications, no count outs, and anything and everything goes.

This is why Sikoa’s interference, one that came after the sequence that involved his older brothers Jimmy and Jey Uso, cannot be stopped by anyone.

Or The Bloodline thought so.

The stipulation of the bout eventually backfired for Reigns, Paul Heyman, and company as Roman’s previous rivals made returns to save Rhodes.

John Cena, who has a bitter history with Sikoa, Roman, and Rock, suddenly ran down the ramp to come to the aid of Cody by throwing Solo out of the ring while also converting an Attitude Adjustment on both Samoan cousins.

-- Once (or twice) in a lifetime --

The Rock then made his glorious entrance and shared the ring with Cena — reminiscent of their WrestleMania 28 and 29 fight — but Rocky had the upper hand as he hit the leader of the Cenation with a "Rock Bottom."

Rollins, who was coming off his World Heavyweight Championship defeat against Drew McIntyre earlier in the night, also made his presence felt in the main event. He went out wearing his "The Shield" gear equipped with a steel chair, but Roman easily handicapped Cody’s side once more after he hit his former Shield brother with a "Superman Punch."

Fortunately for Rhodes, another face returned to the squared circle to offer him a helping hand. The familiar sound of a gong was heard around the stadium, and what followed brought fans back to the "Attitude Era."

It was the Undertaker going face to face with his former foe The Rock, and the Deadman took Johnson out of the equation by handing out a chokeslam to the ‘Great One.’

-- “There’s always a Plan B” --

As the lights went out and then lit up again, Rhodes, Reigns, and Rollins were the only ones remaining in the ring.

Roman grabbed the steel chair and hit Seth to finally get revenge on the latter’s betrayal of him and Dean Ambrose a decade ago, but this actually served as the perfect distraction for Cody. In addition, it also fulfilled Seth’s previous promise that he would be Rhodes’ ‘shield’ against the Tribal Chief.

Veteran WWE referee Charles Robinson signaled for the bell, Samantha Irvin emotionally announced the winner, and it was over — Cody Rhodes is the new WWE undisputed heavyweight champion.

But now that the American Nightmare has finished his story, what’s next for him?

"I think one of the biggest fears coming into this, especially after WrestleMania 39, was if I did finish the story, I would have nothing left," the former Intercontinental champion said during the post-event press conference, as he shared what he thinks the future will hold for him and the WWE's new face of the company.

"It would have literally taken everything I've ever done, every match I've been involved with, every partner I've ever had, every bit of me, it would take [that]. [But] I can tell you, the moment Charles Robinson hit three, I knew that I have everything left to give, still," continued the man who ended Reigns' 1,316-day title reign.

"I have a whole nother level. You've heard the former champion say all the time: 'There are levels to this.' I just leveled up, and I think, if you know me, you know that I'll owe it to the WWE and pro wrestling fans that what we do next has to be extremely special."

Rhodes was not the only superstar to have reached new heights in the two-night spectacle of the WWE.

Bayley defeated Iyo Sky to win the Women's Championship, while Sami Zayn ended Gunther's 666-day title reign to earn the Intercontinental Championship.

Going back, Rollins unsuccessfully defended the WHC against McIntyre as the Scottish Warrior took advantage of the battered "Visionary" in their bout.

However, Drew's celebration in front of the 72,543 was short-lived as Damian Priest finally cashed in his Money in the Bank briefcase against McIntyre after the latter had a brief spat with CM Punk who was in commentary.

Meanwhile, the Awesome Truth and A-Town Down Under ruled their respective tag-team divisions as The Miz and R-Truth got the Raw Tag Team Championships during the six-pack ladder match while Austin Theory and Greyson Waller grabbed the Smackdown Tag Team Titles in the same bout.

-- Mami is still on top --

On the other hand, only two superstars were able to retain their titles during the Showcase of the Immortals.

Rhea Ripley defeated Becky Lynch, allowing ‘The Judgement Day’s’ Mami to remain in possession of the Women’s World Title, while Logan Paul bested Randy Orton and Kevin Owens to still come out as the United States Champion.

Here are the other results of WrestleMania XL Saturday and Sunday:
