Who is caretaker while Marcos Jr. and VP Duterte are both abroad?

MANILA — President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has designated Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin, Agrarian Reform Secretary Conrado Estrella III and Education Secretary Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara as the country’s caretakers as he left for Japan for a working visit.

The President, who left the country Thursday afternoon to attend the World Expo 2025, is set to return over the weekend.

Traditionally, the vice president performs a president's functions when they are abroad, although modern communication technology has made it easier to keep an eye on developments in the country remotely.

Vice President Sara Duterte, who has broken away from the Marcos Jr. administration and is now among its loudest critics, is in Australia for a personal trip that includes a rally in support of her detained father former President Rodrigo Duterte.

Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said Marcos Jr. will also meet the Filipino community in Japan.

On Friday, Marcos Jr. met with representatives from the Japan Tourism Agency, Japan Association of Travel Agents, and the Japan-Philippines Tourism Council to discuss tourism opportunities, including the privatization of NAIA and other regional airports.
