UAAP MediaMANILA -- De La Salle University overpowered the University of the East, 74-46, for a triumphant start to the second round of the UAAP Season 87 women's basketball tournament, Saturday at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.

The Lady Archers gained a measure of revenge against the Lady Warriors, who pulled off a 65-47 upset of the Taft cagers last September 22 to snap a 40-game losing streak.

There was no such upset this time around, as La Salle roared to a 24-12 lead in the opening quarter before extending its advantage to 50-27 at the half.

The Lady Warriors got within 16 points in the third period, but La Salle responded with 14 consecutive points to establish an insurmountable 30-point advantage early in the fourth frame, 67-37.

"For us, we're just looking at correcting our mistakes. Things that we did wrong, the habits we had nung first round, we just want to correct them," said De La Salle head coach Cholo Villanueva. "It's like that in anything that you do, you make mistakes, you correct them, and then you build good habits from those."

The victory allowed the Lady Archers to raise their record to 2-6, tying the Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws, who earlier stunned Adamson University, 67-64, for sixth and seventh spots.

Tricia Mendoza top-scored for La Salle with 15 points to go with five rebounds and two blocks, while Bernice Paraiso added 13 points, 10 rebounds, and four steals while shooting 5-of-6 from the field.

Arabell Bacierto and Luisa San Juan also delivered 12 points apiece for the Lady Archers.

La Salle looks to build on this win when it matches up with Adamson University next Saturday, 6 p.m., at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion (QPav).

Moana Vacalares had 12 points and four losses as the Lady Warriors fell to 1-7 at the bottom of the standings.
