Rico Maierhofer, a key contributor in a number of championship teams but whose career was derailed by injuries, announced his retirement Friday.

On Instagram, Maierhofer, who last played for San Miguel Beer Alab Pilipinas in the ASEAN Basketball League, said failure to stay healthy forced him to walk away from the game.

The 6-foot-6 center rose to prominence as a key player for the La Salle Green Archers, winning a title in Season 70.

He was picked second overall in the 2009 PBA draft by Purefoods, where he won the Philippine Cup championship in his first year there. He was also named the top rookie at the end of the season.

Whatever promise Maierhofer held was snuffed out, however, by an ACL injury he sustained in his second season in the PBA.

He played for four other teams, including Barangay Ginebra, before exiting the league.

In his last professional stint, he won another title as part of Alab Pilipinas in the 2017-18 ABL season.
