The PAGASA agrometeorological station in Echague town in Isabela recorded 40 degrees Celsius on Monday afternoon - the hottest temperature yet this year.

This is the first time that 40-degree Celsius temperature was recorded in the country since 2021. On June 5, 2021, Echague and Tuguegarao City observed maximum temperatures of 40.1 and 40.2 degrees Celsius, respectively.

Four other areas logged temperatures of 38 degrees or higher, namely Camiling, Tarlac, 39.8°C; Tuguegarao City, 39.6°C; Science City of Muñoz, 38.4°C; and San Jose, Occidental Mindoro, 38.0°C.

Meanwhile, Metro Manila also posted its hottest temperature so far this 2024 at  36.9°C in NAIA, Pasay City on Monday afternoon.

These values represent the air temperature measured with a thermometer and not the heat index, which is the heat perceived by the body and influenced by the amount of moisture in the air.

Incidents of heat stroke have been reported in some areas including Cotabato province, Oriental Mindoro, and Pangasinan since the start of the warm and dry season this year.

Experts have reminded the public to wear comfortable clothing, avoid direct sun exposure and strenuous physical activities at midday and the afternoon, and hydrate frequently to avoid heat stress.

The state weather bureau previously forecast temperatures to reach as high as 39 to 41 degrees this April and May in Northern Luzon and the lowlands of Luzon and Mindanao. Metro Manila heat may reach above 38 degrees Celsius by May.

PAGASA also explained that even with the weakening of El Niño, drier and warmer conditions could continue through May.

The all-time hottest temperature in the country was 42.2°C observed in Tuguegarao City, Cagayan on April 22, 1912 and May 11, 1969.
