A 10-year-old child died while his cousin was injured after being stung by a jellyfish at a resort in Camarines Sur.

The victims were with their family for an outing at a beach resort in Barangay Penitan, Siruma last Friday, police said.

Witnesses said that around 12:30 noon, the victims were swimming when they were stung by jellyfish on various parts of their bodies, causing them to scream in pain and call for help.

One of the victims was unconscious when he was pulled from the water.

The 10-year-old died before reaching the medical facility. His companion was transferred to the Bicol Medical Center in Naga City for further medical attention.

Authorities and the resort management reminded the public about the presence of dangerous jellyfish in the area.

A senator in March sought the closure of another resort in Subic, where a five-year-old girl allegedly died after being stung by a jellyfish.

Jellyfish are commonly found from April to June, according to the Department of Tourism-Cagayan Valley.

It said that to neutralize of jellyfish sting, one should rinse the affected body part with vinegar.

It also advised the public to remove tentacles using tweezers, immerse the affected area in hot water for 20-45 minutes to alleviate pain, and seek immediate medical attention if the sting is severe or if the person shows signs of allergic reaction.
