KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Tuesday said he has already chosen the next chief Philippine National Police who will replace outgoing General Rommel Marbil, who is set to retire next month.

The President declined to identify the next PNP chief, saying that he has yet to talk to formally inform the person first.

“They should hear it. Whoever it is should hear about it first from me, not through the news. But yes, we're very clear on what we are going to do next,” he said during a briefing with Palace reporters in Kuala Lumpur.

Among those reportedly being considered as the next PNP chief are:

Asked about his marching orders to the country’s next top cop, Marcos said that he wants the incoming official to continue current efforts of the Philippine National Police in addressing crime in the country.

“Well, what will I tell the new chief PNP? The new chief PNP is a very senior officer in the PNP. He knows the situation. And I will actually tell them, carry on what you are doing. Because we have very good statistics concerning crime,” Marcos said, noting that index crimes in Metro Manila and the rest of the country have declined.

“That – minus lahat when you make that comparison of January 1 to May 16 of last year to this year, everything, murder, homicide, physical injury, robbery, theft, rape, carnapping, all went down. So, they must be doing something right,” he said.

The Philippine leader also noted ongoing efforts to reduce the response time of the police to emergency calls to at least five minutes, especially in the urban areas.

“So, we'll centralize it para maging mas mabilis. At diretso kaagad, makadispatya ng pulis pagka may problema, pagka may gulo. So, we are hoping that at least in the urban areas, we are hoping five minutes. That's the aspiration, once again,” he said.
