MANILA — Actress Nadine Lustre on Thursday filed a complaint over "relentless and malicious attacks she has endured," citing possible violation of the Safe Spaces Act, according to party-list familiar with the case.

Lustre's legal action was backed by ML party-list, as well as Gabriela Women’s Party, who both lauded the actress for her "courage in standing up against online gender-based violence."

Incoming ML party-list Rep. Leila de Lima said Lustre's move was "a necessary step in a time when social media is being used to silence voices that speak for justice and reform."

"We believe in freedom of expression. Pero ang kalayaang ito ay hindi dapat gamitin laban sa katotohanan, dignidad, at demokrasya. Expression becomes dangerous when it is driven by disinformation and personal malice," De Lima said.

"Her case highlights the alarming reality that women who speak out on political and social issues are systematically targeted with harassment to silence them," said incumbent Gabriela Rep. Arlene Brosas.

Brosas added that the online attacks against Lustre was part of a "broader pattern of online violence aimed at politically active women."

"Ang pag-atake sa kababaihan tulad ni Nadine ay hindi isolated case. Ito ay bahagi ng sistemang patriyarkal na gustong patahimikin ang mga kababaihan, lalo na kapag nagpapahayag sila ng kanilang opinyon sa pulitika,” Brosas said.

De Lima thanked Lustre for taking steps to make her online attackers accountable, making her an example for others facing the same harassment.

"Maraming salamat, Nadine, sa tapang at paninindigan. Sa bawat hakbang mo, mas lumalakas ang laban para sa isang makatao, makatarungan, at demokratikong lipunan," she said.

Lustre has always been vocal on several political and social issues, hoping that she can "inspire and influence people and kind of wake them up."
