MANILA — The "traslacion" of Jesus Nazareno this year began almost exactly the same hour as last year, around 4:40 in the morning of January 9.

The carriage or andas was seen near Katigbak Drive, few steps away from Quirino Grandstand, by 4:50 a.m.

At 5:00 in the morning, the andas stopped for a moment before successfully maneuvering to Katigbak Drive.

Twenty minutes later, the flow of the andas paused right at the center of Roxas Boulevard because of the intense movement of devotees who were trying to go near the image of Jesus Nazareno before it moved forward to Padre Burgos Street.

The andas was stuck at Padre Burgos Street for more than an hour before it arrived in front of the National Museum of Anthropology by 7:27 a.m.

Then, it traversed to Taft Avenue, going to Ayala Boulevard a few minutes before 8:00 a.m.

Some of the devotees, like Violeta Buna and Julieta Concepcion, were content to just witness the image pass by in front of them.

They waited for almost five hours at Finance Road.

Together with her grandchildren, Josie Carmen, a long-time devotee of Jesus Nazareno, participated in the traslacion because of her gratefulness to Nazareno.

Meanwhile, Joel Calimlim complained he lost his wallet in the crowd, which contained some of his valuables, like I.D. and cash.

Pero andito 'yung cellphone dalawa, nagvi-video ako eh," Calimlim said.

Cardo Lopez, also a devotee, took the risk of moving near the andas and successfully grabbed the rope of Jesus Nazareno.

Last year, authorities estimated that around 6.5 million devotees had participated in the Traslacion, which took a 3-year pause due to the pandemic.
