MANILA — Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil on Monday said an extended term or not, he will be happy.

“Kung extended I’ll be happy, kung hindi extended I’ll [still] be happy kasi ito na yung organization natin, yung pangako natin na matino PNP natin, may dangal, andito na ako eh, yun po ang gusto natin,” said Marbil.

Earlier, President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. said he was considering extending Marbil's term as PNP chief, noting that the argument for it is "very strong" amid the election season.

Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Jonvic Remulla also said there are "strong indications" that Marbil's term will be extended.

The PNP top cop said he will be meeting with other generals to relay the programs of the organization.

Any PNP member with the rank of 1-star general to 3-star general can be appointed by the President as PNP Chief.

Remulla said there is already a list of officials who might succeed Marbil.

Several senior officers are qualified to be the next PNP chief, including PNP deputy chief for administration Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez, acting PNP deputy chief for operations Lt. Gen. Robert Rodriguez, PNP chief directorial staff Lt. Gen. Maj. Gen. Edgar Alan Okubo, Criminal Investigation and Detection Group chief Brig. Gen. Nicolas Torre III, and NCRPO chief Brig. Gen Anthony Aberin.

“Maraming heneral ang magagaling, all of them are capable of being a chief PNP,” Marbil said.

Marbil will reach the mandatory retirement age of 56 on Feb. 7.

He is a member of the Philippine Military Academy Sambisig Class of 1991 and was named the country’s 30th PNP chief on April 1, 2024.
