MANILA — The House of Representatives approved on second reading on Monday a measure seeking to extend to six years the term of Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Officials, instead of the current three years.

Under House Bill 11287, which was approved via viva voce during plenary session, the six-year term of these officials shall begin on June 30, 2029, after the synchronized Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections on the 2nd Monday of May 2029.

No elective barangay official shall serve for more than two consecutive terms in the same position, while no elective Sangguniang Kabataan official shall serve for more than one term, according to the measure, principally authored by House Speaker Martin Romualdez and other House leaders.

The bill further provides for a transitory provision granting all incumbent Barangay and SK officials elected last October 30, 2023 to remain in office until the next elections on May 2029, unless sooner removed or suspended for cause.

Last January 14, the Senate approved on third and final reading Senate Bill 2816, which sets the term of office of elected barangay officials and SK members to four years, with a limit of three consecutive terms in the same position for barangay officials. The bill also states that the next regular barangay and SK elections shall be held on the first Monday of October 2027 and every four years thereafter.
