MANILA — 14 years later, Mary Jane Veloso is back home.

Sentenced to death in Indonesia for drug trafficking, Veloso touched Philippine soil early Wednesday where she was greeted by a small group of supporters and her two sons, 1 and 6-years old at the time of her arrest in 2010.

Veloso claims that her bag was only handed to her by her recruiters. Their arrest shortly before her execution by firing squad earned her a last-minute reprieve from death row.

Veloso’s transfer to the country effectively eliminates the possibility of execution as the Philippines does not practice capital punishment.

Shortly after her arrival, she was brought to the Correctional Institution for Women (CIW) in Mandaluyong, assisted by authorities from NBI, Bureau of Correction and DOJ

Here, Veloso was finally able to hold and reunite with family members.
