MANILA — The family and supporters of Mary Jane Veloso attended the first day of Simbang Gabi in Baclaran Church early Monday to pray for her safe return to the Philippines.

Veloso’s family attended the Mass after their scheduled compassionate visit to Yogyakarta was cancelled.

Indonesian authorities transferred Mary Jane to Jakarta on Sunday to begin the process of her transfer to the Philippine custody.

“Bagaman hindi na namin mabibisita si Mary Jane, mapagpasalamat kaming nagdadasal ngayon dahil nagsisimula ang paglipat niya dito. Umaasa din kaming magkasama na kami ni Mary Jane sa aming bahay ngayong Pasko,” said Celia Veloso, the mother of Mary Jane.

(Though we will no longer be able to visit Mary Jane, we are thankful in praying now because her transfer here has begun. We are also hoping that we can be together at home with Mary Jane this Christmas.)

Supporters of Mary Jane also prayed for her clemency.

OFW group Migrante International and the Task Force to Save Mary Jane Veloso likewise announced a week-long vigil in Baclaran Church starting Monday, following the first day of Simbang Gabi.

Officials from the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Bureau of Corrections have already flown to Jakarta to finalize Manila's prisoner transfer agreement with Jakarta.

Veloso is expected to arrive in Manila on the evening of December 18, according to sources.

Veloso was arrested and sentenced to death in 2010 after 2.6 kilograms of heroin was found in her luggage, but the Filipina asserted that the bag was only handed to her by her recruiters.

She narrowly escaped death in 2015 after her recruiters were arrested shortly before her scheduled execution.

Reports of Veloso's transfer to a Philippine prison started earlier this year, shortly after new Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto rose to power.
