DAVAO CITY — The Davao Crocodile Park and Zoo in Davao City announced on Thursday that its main attraction and flagship animal, saltwater crocodile Pangil, passed away due to cancer on Saturday, January 25. 

At 18 feet long, Pangil was known as the largest saltwater crocodile in captivity in the country, following the death of Lolong in 2013.

Estimated to be 85 years, Pangil was rescued from Bunawan, Agusan del Sur, the same location where Lolong was discovered.

"Pangil peacefully passed away due to complications from metastatic squamous cell carcinoma. Despite extensive medical care and surgical intervention, the cancer had spread, ultimately leading to multi-systemic organ failure," the crocodile park said in a statement. 

The Davao Crocodile Park said that Pangil was not merely an attraction as he was also a beloved icon who inspired visitors to appreciate the beauty and significance of wildlife.

"For decades, Pangil has been a symbol of strength, wonder, and the rich biodiversity of our country," the park management noted.

"As Pangil rests peacefully, we extend our deepest gratitude to all who have shared in his journey, celebrated his life, and supported our commitment to preserving the natural world. Let us honor his memory by continuing to protect and respect the wildlife that enriches our lives," they added.
