MANILA -- Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon on Wednesday promised better services and a smoother commuting experience for LRT and MRT passengers soon.

He said the Department of Transporation (DOTr) was set to pilot run the removal of x-ray machines in certain high-traffic stations and replace them with K9 sniffing dogs in a bid to avoid congestion.

(During peak hours, lines at x-ray machines get really long. We are now studying how to remove x-ray machines without sacrificing the security of commuters.)

The transportation chief also promised free WiFi in train stations and cashless payments.

(We will have a turnstile that will honor credit cards, debit cards, and e-wallets.)

Dizon said he is also set to announce the final termination of the contractor for the common station in Quezon City, which he said would signify the search for a new contractor.

He said the President ordered DOTr to expedite the construction of the common station and the MRT 7 to help commuters.

FREE RIDES

Meanwhile, around a million passengers are expected to benefit from the free rides offered by LRT-1, LRT-2, and MRT-3 from April 30 to May 3.

Dizon said upon orders from the President, the free rides will be done annually during the week of Labor Day.

The Palace announced the four-day free rides to honor Filipino workers this Labor Day.

(This is a very meaningful gift to our workers. The President extends his deep gratitude to them.)

Commuters praised the initiative to give free rides, as they claim they can save as much as P300.

(This is very helpful as we don't need to pay for fares for 4 days. We can save as much as P300, which we can use for our meals.)

Some students say they can save their allowances intended for transportation.

"Bilang estudyante, nakakatipid yun samin, mas mahal kapag di kami nakasakay sa LRT," said Allaiza Corbo, a student.

(As students, we can save better. We need to spend more if we don't catch the LRT on the way to school.)
