MANILA — Pork prices at Kamuning Market in Quezon City have gone up a week after Holy Week due to increased demand, according to vendors.

They said higher gas prices and production costs are also pushing prices up.

“Hindi namin gusto yung nagmahal talaga. Akala nga namin bababa ay sobra pa po yung taas… ina-adjust na lang namin yung bentahan namin… medyo nakakaawa sa mamimili talaga,” said Rene Mercado, a pork vendor.

(We really didn't want prices to go up. We even thought it would go down, but it shot up. We adjusted our prices...we feel for the customers)

Mercado said he now sells in smaller quantities to manage the high prices.

“Dati kumukuha kami ng buong baboy, ngayong hindi na po. Kung ano lang kaya namin maibenta yun na lang,” Mercado said.

(We used to get a whole pig, but we don't anymore. Just what we can sell)

Prices for kasim, pork chops, pork ribs, pork meat, and special cuts rose to P350/kilogram from P370/kg last week. Pork belly also went up by P20, now selling for P480/kg.

These prices are higher than the Department of Agriculture’s suggested retail prices, which set pork shoulder at P350/kg and pork belly at P380/kg.

Pork bones, or buto-buto, which were priced at P330/kg during Holy Week, have also risen to P350/kg.

Due to the higher costs, vendors said fewer customers are buying.

“Sa ngayon talaga medyo hindi maganda ang bentahan. Syempre mahal, yung iba kasi noong dati kumukuha ng dalawang kilo, ngayon kalahati na lang,” said Mercado.

(As of now, we aren't selling much because it's expensive. Customers who used to buy two kilos now only get half)

Anthony Paragas, who went to the market as early as 6 a.m., said he will have to buy less because of the higher prices.

“Tiis-tiis na lang, pagkakasyahin na lang ang budget… minsan lalagyan na lang ng gulay kasi di lang naman yung porkchop ang bibilhin,” Paragas said.

(We'll have to make do. Sometimes, we just add the pork to vegetables instead of cooking it as a separate dish)

Meanwhile, chicken prices have remained stable. Whole chickens are priced at P200/kg, chicken legs at P150/kg, and both wings and drumsticks at P220/kg.

Most fish prices have also stayed steady. Tilapia ranges from P140 to P160 per kilogram, and milkfish is at P200.

Round scad prices slipped from P280–P300 to P200–P240 per kilogram, thanks to an abundant supply, according to fish vendors.

Some vegetable prices, however, have increased slightly. Cabbage rose from P100 to P120 per kilogram, bitter gourd or ampalaya went from P90 to P100, and eggplant increased from P90 to P100.

Chinese cabbage and squash prices were stable at P20 per bundle, and chayote stayed flat at P40 per kilogram.
