MANILA — Some business and industry groups on Tuesday raised concerns about the possible impact of the EDSA rebuilding project on their day-to-day operations as it is expected to cause heavier-than-usual traffic once it begins next month.

In a statement, the Supply Chain Management of the Philippines (SCMAP) said those who produce and deliver products to malls and supermarkets will be most affected.

“This may lead to longer delivery times, less stocks in shelves and, possibly, higher prices,” it warned.

While the group acknowledged how necessary it is to fix EDSA, it said the government should better inform stakeholders of what it plans to do “so we can plan earlier and better.”

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) earlier announced that it will implement an odd-even scheme on EDSA starting June 16. But many motorists and experts have slammed the plan as ineffective in managing the traffic flow, not to mention, confusing, as it will differ from the number coding scheme being enforced in roads outside of the major thoroughfare.

“And, of course, we hope that the project is finished on time, if not earlier,” added SCMAP.

Meanwhile, the Makati Business Club (MBC) said the expected traffic congestion on EDSA will affect every employed individual, especially those who do not have the option to work from home such as service workers, and the companies they work for.

“The cost of traffic which is delay, fuel, waste of time and resources, who pays for that? We pay for that, not the government. It’s a drain on our gross domestic product, yung cost na yan,” said MBC Executive Director Apa Ongpin.

Ongpin said he hopes that as EDSA undergoes a revamp, more importance will be given to mass transportation and active transportation.

“We really need better mobility. What are the ways we can move the most people most efficiently? This highlights that all the past governments have failed to provide adequate, safe, comfortable, reliable and efficient mass transportation,” he said.

The Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) meanwhile urged more private companies to implement hybrid work schemes amid the rebuilding.

“There is a move to encourage corporations to do home office, work from home, actually… just like during the pandemic,” said PCCI President Eunina Mangio.
