MANILA — Commission on Elections (Comelec) officials and employees braved Monday's downpour brought by typhoon "Enteng" to attend the contract signing and groundbreaking ceremony of their new building set to rise in Pasay City.

Monday's contract signing and groundbreaking ceremony, attended by some 200 Comelec personnel, was actually the "third" time for the said project, said Commissioner Rey Bulay, who is in charge of the P8.225-billion project.

The first two groundbreaking rites happened during the leadership of the late chairman Sixto Brillantes and former chairperson Sheriff Abas.

The new Comelec building will rise at the Centeal Business Park I in Pasay City, which is expected to formally start with the installation of three building foundations within the next six months, Comelec chairman George Erwin Garcia.

Comelec's contracted party for the building project is Megafoundation Intermational Corporation.

The project, however, faces challenge because the land has water beneath it, Bulay said.

Garcia said they want to see the new Comelec building fully completed by 2028.

He also clarified that additional budget would be needed to make the building functional.

"Kaya lang yung mga furnishings, yung kabuuan, kakailanganin ng dagdag na budget," Garcia said.
