MANILA -- Authorities are validating 23 reported deaths due to the habagat and three consecutive tropical cyclones, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said Thursday.

In its 8 a.m. report, the NDRRMC said the weather systems left 15 others missing and injured at least 23 people.

The bad weather also affected nearly 300,000 families or around 1 million individuals. Of this figure, around 18,000 families or almost 70 people fled to evacuation centers.

The habagat enhanced by tropical cyclones Ferdine, Gener, and Helen damaged around 1,200 houses.

The NDRRMC pegged the cost of damage to infrastructure at around P2.4 million.

Some 600 cities and towns canceled classes due to the bad weather.

Government provided around P17.4 million worth of assistance, the NDRRMC said.

The habagat will bring moderate to heavy rains in some areas on Thursday, PAGASA said.

About 20 big storms and typhoons hit the Philippines or its surrounding waters each year, killing dozens of people.
