MANILA (2nd UPDATE)Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1  was raised in nine areas on Tuesday morning and TCWS No. 2 in 1 as Typhoon Carina gained strength while moving westward, weather bureau PAGASA said. 

TCWS No. 2 has been raised in Batanes (Itbayat, Basco, Mahatao, Uyugan, Ivana), with PAGASA saying winds of between 62 km/h and 88 km/h may be expected in at least 24 hours.

As of PAGASA's 11 a.m. bulletin, the center of Typhoon Carina was estimated based on all available data at 320 km east of Basco, Batanes or 405 km east northeast of Aparri, Cagayan.

It has maximum sustained winds of 140 km/h near the center and gustiness of up to 170 km/h, up from 130 km/h winds and gusts of up to 160 km/h earlier Tuesday morning.

PAGASA warned Carina is exhibiting strong to typhoon-force winds extending outwards up to 560 km from the center.

The southwest monsoon enhanced by Carina will also bring strong to gale-force gusts in 16 areas including Metro Manila especially in coastal and upland areas exposed to winds.

The typhoon is forecast to steadily intensify and may reach its peak intensity before making landfall over the northern portion of Taiwan between Wednesday evening and Thursday (25 July) morning. Outside the Philippine area of responsibility, Carina will cross the Taiwan Strait and make landfall over southeastern China on Thursday afternoon or evening.
