MANILA — The Department of Tourism says it hopes to boost tourism in the Soccsksargen with their efforts to spotlight the beauty of the region through their Philippine Experience Program.

According to the DOT, the program, which was launched last year, facilitates “a cultural tourism circuit development focused on heritage, culture, and arts to enhance current tour and domestic circuit offerings, which include: Food and Gastronomy, Pilgrimage and Wellness, Living Cultures and Heritage, and an Arts caravan.”

Tourism Secretary Christina Frasco said that the caravan started Wednesday in General Santos City where the delegates were given the opportunity to experience the beaches of Sarangani.

“They also had the opportunity to experience the actual tuna harvest which is quite an immersive weave into this thriving economic source for this region,” Frasco said in a televised briefing.

“Tapos, we also had the opportunity to visit Malungon in Sarangani kung saan nagkaroon po tayo ng immersion and the opportunity to reach iyong B’laan and Tagakaolo communities and tribes and there we were able to appreciate their culture and tradition and their way of life.”

Frasco said the caravan will make stops in Koronadal City, Lake Sebu, Sultan Kudarat, and North Cotabato.

“Napakaganda po ng Mindanao and this region of Soccsksargen presented a wide variety of diverse tourism experiences – from mountainscapes to beaches, to immersions in our local indigenous tribes and really opportunities to get to know the heart and soul of the Philippines,” Frasco said.

The Tourism Chief meanwhile highlighted efforts of the national government to boost tourism by investing in road infrastructures as well as in the improvement of airports and seaports.

“And dahil po na iyong Pilipinas ay surrounded by water comparative to our ASEAN neighbors na magkakatabi lang po sila – iyong biggest challenge din po natin is really connectivity – that is why we’re working very closely with the Department of Transportation para naman po mas dumami pa iyong ating direct flights into the Philippines,” she said.

Frasco said domestic tourism in the Philippines generated P53.3 billion in 2022, while the country reaped over P482 billion in international visitor receipts in 2023.
