MANILA — Activists trooped to the Supreme Court on Wednesday to oppose the application of 2 "warrant factory" judges to higher posts.

Quezon City Regional Trial Court Branch 89 Presiding Judge Cecilyn Burgos-Villavert is applying for a Sandiganbayan or Court of Appeals (CA) post while Manila Regional Trial Court Branch 174 Presiding Judge Jason Zapanta is aiming for a CA seat.

Karapatan Deputy Secretary-General Jigs Mayuga said they are questioning the integrity of Villavert and Zapanta because of their supposed biases against activists.

“Kaya ho kami nandito, alam namin ang track record ni Judge Villavert at Judge Zapanta, in particular kay Judge Villavert, 76 activists ang na-detain arbitrarily because of her issuance of search warrant,” Mayuga said.

Mayuga noted that among the cases handled by Villavert was the case of activist Reina Mae Nasino, while Zapanta was the judge who issued a warrant against activists in the so-called “bloody Sunday” in Batangas.

“Kaya mainam na balikan ang track record ni Judge VIllavert dahil hindi niya nami-meet ang requrirements na integrity, comptency bilang judge,” Mayuga said.

Mayuga said they have also sent letters to the Supreme Court to officially register their opposition to the applications of Burgos-Villavert and Zapanta.

ABS-CBN has reached out to the courts of Burgos-Villavert and Zapanta but they have yet to respond.
