MANILA — PAGASA has placed broad swaths of the Philippines under dangerous hot weather warnings as searing temperatures are still expected to bake the country Thursday.

A sweltering heat index of up to 45 degrees Celsius is forecast for Metro Manila on Thursday while Cavite could feel intense heat of 47 degrees Celsius, according to the weather bureau.

Additionally, Dagupan City in Pangasinan could hit a roasting heat index of 46 degrees Celsius while heat indices of 45 degrees are predicted in Subic Bay, Olongapo City; San Jose, Occidental Mindoro; Aborlan, Palawan; and Roxas City, Capiz.

The following areas are also forecast to scorch under severe heat on Thursday.

Heat index refers to the actual heat felt by a person, and continued exposure to hot temperatures could result in exhaustion and stroke.

Meanwhile, PAGASA weather forecaster Rhea Torres told TeleRadyo Serbisyo that scattered rains could arrive in parts of Mindanao on Thursday.

Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi are forecast to experience rains due to the Intertropical Convergence Zone or ITCZ, Torres said.

She noted that the country will continue to endure high heat indices until the middle of May when the rainy season is expected to begin.
