MANILA -- Dermatologist and cosmetic doctor Manny Calayan has confirmed that he and Pie Calayan have separated.

Speaking exclusively to ABS-CBN News, he said, “Separation was amicable. We parted ways civilly. Hindi naman kami nagdemandahan, nagsisiraan ng ganito.”

“Before pandemic, that was 2019. I think mga August 'yun. Ayun, we separated ways. The kids are happier na we’re in this situation kesa lagi nag-aaway, merong misunderstanding.”

Despite the separation, they remain business partners.

“Yes, I’m still with her in business. We’re business partners na lang. Wala na kami. We’re in a civil union naman. Nasa clinic pa rin kami, still the same. Still running naman pero different timeslot. Hindi na kami nagpapang-abot,” he said.

We asked Dr. Calayan if he can share the reason behind the separation.

“May mga indifferences na rin kami. Kasi 'di ba umalis si Dra. Pie for five years, nag-States. Then bumalik siya dito, parang nasanay ako sa pagka-binata ulit nung nawala siya. Then umuwi siya, hinahanap ko ulit 'yung pagka-binata ko, then ayaw niya. Hindi kami magkaintindihan sa ganoon, I’m happier now. I hope she’s happy too,” he said.

The Calayans have three daughters. The eldest is a practicing aesthetician and residing in Canada. The middle child is the one running their Calayan derm clinic in the country, while the youngest is still in university finishing her medicine degree.

The past years, there had been talks about the health condition of Dra. Pie, and Dr. Manny confirmed that she had a life-threatening illness called Adrenal Fatigue Syndrome.

“Kumbaga 'yung adrenals natin, 'yung hormones na pinaka-importante sa atin, nag-failure siya, so nagka-pneumonia siya, ang dami niyang sakit na nagkaroon. Eh hindi madetect-detect dito sa atin, so I brought her to LA (Los Angeles),” he narrated.

“Dun sa hospital doon, then for four to five years nandun siya, gumaling siya for two years. Pinaaral ko na rin 'yung kids ko doon since andun ang mommy nila. Sabi ko might as well doon na kayo mag-high school at magtapos para samahan niyo ang mommy niyo.”

It was an emotionally-challenging chapter of their lives.

“Sabi ko, Lord, ano bang ginawa ko? Anong nangyari kay Pie?’ Eh buti na lang talaga, miracle talaga 'yun, naagapan ko siyang dalihin sa Amerika,” he said.

Now, according to him, Dra. Pie is well and fully recovered.

“She’s very well. She’s very active in derma conventions. She’s one of the presidents of the derma society. In-e-mail ko naman siya, kinongratulate ko on her endeavors ngayon. Kasi nung kami, nasa bahay lang 'yan. Bahay, trabaho. Ngayon, nakiki-socialize na siya. Malaki rin ang pinagbago niya,” he said.
