Symbolisms hold special meaning in Maris Racal’s life now. Recently, she attended the Berlinale International Film Festival for the European premiere of her movie, Sunshine, directed by Antoinette Jadaone. But the triumphant moment did not end there—Sunshine won the Crystal Bear for Best Film at the 75th Berlin International Film Festival. The sports drama film premiered in September 2024 at the Toronto International Film Festival, but she couldn’t attend due to a scheduled shoot for her ongoing series Incognito.

After a tough time, her appearance at this international event, representing the Philippines, became even more meaningful for her. Clad in a light yellow haute couture dress by Filipino designer Jot Losa, which features a flowy silhouette and a silk sampaguita garland framing the neckline, Maris was radiant on the red carpet, exuding a soft sunny glow as she walked on sunshine.

How apropos that during the Metro.Style cover shoot, actress and singer Maris Racal also took on a European-influenced theme, channeling an effortlessly cool French lady—clad in Parisienne chic ensembles, posing confidently and turning her intriguing charm on like a pro. In hindsight, the French-inspired concept might have been a portent of things to come—it was paving the way to some sort of a renaissance, not that she needed one.

Renaissance is a French word that means “rebirth,” and while it’s generally good, this process can likewise cause pain. Recently, Maris had to go through that and turn the next page to a new chapter in her life.

2024 was undeniably a huge year for Maris. She experienced a career resurgence with the massive success of the ABS-CBN series Can’t Buy Me Love. In that series, Maris made a mark with her bubbly, silly, and perky character—the antagonist-turned-lovable ally Irene Tiu.

“2024 ko is the year na marami talagang doors na nag-open for me na hindi ko in-expect at all. Despite may mga problems, thankful pa rin ako kasi, [ang mga] pangarap ko nangyayari e. Alam mo ’yun? ’Yung mga dream projects ko with my glam team and with my acting, nangyayari siya. So, 2024 really opened a lot of doors and malaking stepping stone for greater things. Everything came as a surprise. Hindi ko in-expect,” she reflected.

But the surprises did not end there. Before the year ended, she figured in a controversy with onscreen partner Anthony Jennings and his ex-girlfriend that affected her personal life and career, leading to a public apology. As a result, the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) entry And The Breadwinner Is… starring Vice Ganda, of which Maris is a part, successfully came out in theaters, but she couldn’t join its promotions.

In an interview early this month, we asked Maris how she’s been, and she’s humbled yet optimistic. “I’m good, thank you. 2025 has been a refreshing restart for me. Every day, I’m feeling more grateful, positive, and hopeful. My mindset this year is all about being more present in every situation. I want to practice mindfulness, stay grounded, and focus on my goals. Being mindful really helps center me and keeps me aligned with what matters,” she thoughtfully replied.

One comment that really stood out to me was how impressed people are with the quality of the action scenes the production is delivering. I can’t wait for everyone to see the next intense episodes,” she happily noted.

Before Netflix released the show, Maris shared with Metro.Style what made her agree to do it. “Noong pinitch ’yun sa akin, it really sparked joy and excitement in me kasi it’s my first time to do an action project. Na-challenge ako definitely kasi I don’t know anything about action. I just enjoy watching them. Pero ’yung training, stunts, actual paghawak ng baril—lahat hindi ko alam ’yun. So na-excite ako kasi I love portraying roles na kailangan kong mag-train for it,” she shared. “I’ve done roles na alam ko na at hindi ko na kailangan mag-training kasi inner work naman ’yung ibang roles e. Pero ito, kailangan may new set of skills ka talagang aralin. So, iyon ang mga gusto kong projects. Nag-yes agad ako.”

Her schedule is so swamped that even when Incognito is currently streaming on Netflix, she’s coming out on Netflix again with another project, Sosyal Climbers, slated for a February 27 release. Sosyal Climbers, a movie pairing her with Anthony anew, is a sexy, romantic comedy about a couple who assumes false identities and decides to scam rich people. She has also started doing promotional activities for the film.

Sunshine, a film written and directed by Antoinette Jadaone under ANIMA Studios and Project 8 Projects, is a story about a young and talented gymnast who discovers she is pregnant just before trying out for the national team. Maris portrays the titular role of Sunshine as the troubled athlete who must find a way to make her dream come true despite her situation. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and was made an official selection at the 75th Edition of The Berlin International Festival under the Generation 14plus Competition. It was also a part of the Palm Springs International Film Festival under the World Cinema Now section and has been nominated for Best Youth Film at the 17th Asia Pacific Screen Awards.

On what Maris liked about Sunshine when it was first pitched to her, she said, “First and foremost, the story, because its so compelling and it’s so brave. And also the fact that it’s written and directed by Direk Tonette Jadaone who’s now my friend. But, dati sobrang idol ko siya at sobrang gusto ko siyang maka-work. Hanggang ngayon, gusto ko pa rin siyang maka-work ulit kasi she writes the most entertaining and the most riveting stories.”

“My character in Sunshine—her emotional baggage is pretty challenging. It’s a very heavy story. I interviewed a lot of women para mas ma-build ko pa ’yung character. But really, I’m going to be honest, the most challenging part of it was the whole gymnastics part. Kasi I have to be flexible—iyong flexibility aspect ng isang gymnast. The hours of trainings and ilang sessions namin ’yun ginawa. I also watched a competition and I met my coach who’s also a gymnast. Nakita ko iyong hours of training niya. Just by watching them, they’re really doing magic with their bodies. Parang how can you do those stunts? It’s really years of training. Grabe iyong respect ko after [watching] that day. That sport is not a joke,” she remarked, still amazed by the gymnasts.

Musings of a fashion muse
With all the different roles and hats she’s wearing, Maris has inadvertently showcased a variety of fashion looks that certainly looked good on her regardless of whatever character she’s playing. Kudos to her character Irene Tiu on the hit series Can’t Buy Me Love for bringing out this side of her.

“Prior to Irene Tiu, hindi ko in-expect na may ganu’n pala akong kaartehan na kayang gawin. So si Irene Tiu ’yung release ko sa lahat ng pent-up emotions ko na kailangan na mag-break free. That character? The whole time naglaro lang talaga ko. The way I built Irene in my head, she’s this very mayaman but she’s not mababaw. It’s just that she’s so sucked into their world na hindi na niya alam ’yung buhay sa labas ng mga mayayaman. So definitely, may mga taong ganu'n talaga. Definitely, isa siya sa mga favorite characters ko,” she said.

“Bata pa lang ako, mahilig na ako sa fashion and sa photoshoots. Photographer ko ’yung younger sister ko, tapos nagshu-shoot lang kami sa bahay kasi laking America's Next Top Model kami. So everywhere, I should have been wearing my best at that time. Pero nag-mature na ang taste ko over the years. Well, it comes with age and taste also,” she began.

In terms of fashion icons, lately, she’s been looking to Swedish fashion model Elsa Hosk for inspiration and is obsessing about actress Taylor Russell’s style. She’s also inspired by pop culture and icons from decades ago and current pop icons when it comes to experimenting with fashion looks. But she candidly admitted that she also gets inspiration from Pinterest.

Overall, her fashion and beauty looks change every now and then, depending on her mood. “I like to change my style every now and then. Even my glam team, sasabihin na lang nila, ‘Ano’ng amats [tama] mo ngayon?’ Like ’yan ang literal line nila. Kaya ang tawag ko sa glam team ko—Team Fantasy. Kasi kung ano-ano na lang ’yung maisip ko. Super playful kami,” she revealed, looking happy with all the fun she’s been having with her style mentors.

As Ernest Hemingway said, “The most beautiful people we encounter in life are often those who have walked through the fire.” There’s beauty in the fire that this artist went through. And, embracing a sunshine mindset—wherein inner peace is the goal—nurtures this eternal flame within, symbolic of her burning passion for life despite the storms.
