MANILA (UPDATE/CORRECTION) – Actress Karen de los Reyes took to social media to mourn the death of Rudy Francisco, her co-star in a 2001 (not in the 90s as earlier reported) fast food commercial that made her a household name.

On Instagram, De los Reyes shared a clip from her popular McDonald’s commercial with Francisco, who passed away on Wednesday, May 8, at the age of 96.

“Sad day today,” De los Reyes said in the Instagram post, which also showed photos of her with the late actor.

“Rest in peace, Lolo Rudy Francisco,” she went on. “My deepest condolences to you and your family, [RS Francisco].”

In the iconic ad, Francisco is a forgetful grandfather who kept on mistakenly calling De los Reyes’ character Gina instead of Karen.

The scene ends with a touching gesture from Lolo who cuts a hamburger in half and calls Karen by her right name, saying she is his favorite granddaughter.

FROM ACTOR TO LAWYER

A former Sampaguita Pictures actor in the early ‘50s, Francisco turned his back on showbiz and pursued a career as a lawyer, according to The Philippine Star. He eventually became a legal counsel for Sampaguita Pictures.

One of his sons is RS Francisco, entrepreneur and star of the local staging of “M. Butterfly.”

In a Facebook post on Thursday, RS said those who want to pay their last respects to his father may visit the Immaculate Concepcion Cathedral in Cubao, with the final mass set at 1 p.m. on May 12.

“You will forever be in our hearts, Dad. I love you,” he said, not giving further details about his father’s passing.
