Owl City's 'Fireflies' hits 1 billion streams on Spotify

More than a decade after its release, Owl City’s hit song “Fireflies” has officially joined music streaming platform Spotify’s “Billions Club” after reaching one billion streams.

The streaming platform’s “Billions Club” features over 900 songs that have surpassed one billion streams, as of writing.

In a social media post on Tuesday, the synth-pop act thanked its fans for their support on its newest milestone.

“A billion thank yous. I never would have imagined this when I recorded this little song in my bedroom. Thank you for all your support along the way. Here’s to a billion more,” Owl City wrote on Instagram.

Released in 2009, the lead single from the album “Ocean Eyes” reached the Billboard Hot 100 for two non-consecutive weeks and also topped the charts in several other countries including the United Kingdom, Norway, and Australia. It also earned a VEVO Certified Award in 2013 after it surpassed 100 million views on YouTube.




In 2023, the track earned its Diamond certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) which marked Owl City’s first RIAA diamond certification.

Known for its whimsical and electronic-pop sound, "Fireflies" also became one of the top 10 best-selling songs of 2009 in the United States, with over 2.7 million digital units sold during the same year.
