Shaina Magdayao takes on first-ever role as lawyer in Sins of the Father: ‘Bago lahat for me’

Despite her many years in the entertainment industry, Kapamilya actress Shaina Magdayao revealed that she is about to take on a completely new and refreshing challenge in portraying a lawyer for the first time in the upcoming series Sins of the Father.

During the media conference and series preview, Shaina admitted that she thought she had already done almost every type of role in her career.

“Kapag tinatanong kung mayroon role pa ba ako na hindi nagawa, wala na ako masabi kasi parang feeling ko noon nagawa ko na lahat. But then when this show was pitched to me, I realized na mayroon pa pala ako na hindi nagawa which is portraying being a lawyer,” Shaina said.

To prepare for the role, Shaina said she immersed herself in legal dramas and consulted friends who work in the legal field to understand the tone and rhythm of delivering legal dialogue.

“Growing up, nanonood tayo ng mga series and mga movies, and marami rin tayong kaibigan na mga lawyers. It’s actually challenging kasi may mga terminologies and syempre matter of fact mo sasabihin ‘yung linya mo,” she shared. 

“Hindi siya tentative o kaya hindi ka para mag-iisip bago mo sabihin ‘yung statement. Mayroon siyang rhythm, so isa rin siyang malaking challenge for me,” Shaina added. “Mayroon silang confidence.”

In the series, Shaina plays Attorney Leah Rivera, a character whose loyalties remain unclear, as she could either be an ally or adversary to the victims of the scam involving Gerald Anderson’s and John Arcilla's characters.

Describing her role, Shaina said: “Makulay po ang past ni Attorney Lea, and ang show na ‘to tinatalakay niya is scamming, but also sins. And siguro ako right now, ‘yung character ko nandoon siya sa mundo ng mga kasalanan.”

She went on: “Siguro doon sa character ko, ‘yung para bang the [question is whether or not] the past or your mistakes should define you. ‘Yun siguro ‘yung pinakakailangang matanong kay Attorney Lea tsaka sa mga manonood.”

Ahead of the press conference, Shaina unveiled her character’s new look, including a striking short blonde hairstyle.

Aside from the thrill of exploring a new type of role, Shaina said she was equally excited about reuniting with former co-stars and veteran director FM Reyes.

“Nakaka-excite kasi bago siya for me and also it’s my reunion project with Gerald and most of them,” she said.

She also emphasized how meaningful it was to work again with Direk FM Reyes, with it being more than 20 years since their last project.

“I said yes to the show because of the fact din na makaka-collaborate ko siya ulit and syempre marami nang nagbago sa amin. Nagbago na ako bilang tao and siya rin, so it’s really nice to collaborate now,” she expressed. “Ngayon, masasabi ko na bago lahat for me.”

Sins of the Father is set to premiere on June 23, Monday, at 9:30 PM on Kapamilya Channel, Kapamilya Online Live, A2Z, TV5, iWant, and TFC.
