Sam Morelos plays Nikki Velasco in the Netflix sitcom "That '90s Show."

The feisty and lovable character was not originally written as Filipino, but this changed when Morelos booked the role.

In the show’s Part 2 which premiered earlier this year, Morelos got to showcase her singing talent for the first time in the series.

She joked that this aspect of her character further establishes her Filipino background.

“It was such an incredible experience," said Morelos. "I get to use all of my talent or knowledge and prowess. No one knew that I sang before. People on set see a different side of me than when I'm at home or when I'm alone with my guitar and things like that."

The actress said: "I felt really good and proud to be able to show that off. And it also again speaks to Nikki's Filipino-ness because if she wasn’t able to sing, is she really Filipino?”

Morelos also recently finished filming a lead role in the upcoming Hulu film "Summer of '69."

By playing Filipino-American teens, she represents their lives, struggles, and joys onscreen - something that was rarely seen in Hollywood for a long time.

“I feel a lot of pride, especially being Filipino and leading a movie," said Morelos. "My heart [was] filled with so much joy. Just being part of this project created more opportunities for Filipino actors to have their light and to have their moment. It’s such a lovely feeling to be seen.”

The young star, who recently turned 19, is also looking forward to going back to school.

She will attend New York University this fall where she will major in Drama.

Asked about how teens are portrayed on the show, Morelos said: "Because it's a comedy and because it's not a children's sitcom, and it’s got a little more of an edge and a raunchier edge to it, it’s very similar to how teenagers talk because they are teenagers."

"They're aware of more things than happy-sunshine-rainbows," she added. "We’re in a stage of life where we’re old enough to be conscious about the world around us and the complexities of relationships and sexuality and things like that but young enough to not be an adult yet and know everything.

Part 3 of "That '90s Show" premieres on Aug 22.
