Ryza Cenon goes bald for role in film 'Lilim'

MANILA -- Actress Ryza Cenon sports a daring new look, after opting to go bald instead of using prosthetics to fully embrace her role in Mikhail Red’s forthcoming horror flick “Lilim.”

“Hindi naman po siya nire-require. Ako po mismo 'yung nagsabi na magpapakalbo ako. For me, mas okay siya sa karakter ko at nag-look test po kami, hindi ko trip 'yung prostethics. Hindi ko gusto 'yung itsura. Parang sabi ko, mas okay kung kalbo talaga. Mas makakatulong siya sa karakter ko,” she said in an interview at the film’s set in Quezon City, Saturday.

(It's not really required. I just decided. For me, it suits my character better, and when we did a look test, I didn't like the prosthetics. I didn't like how it looked. I thought it would be better if I were really bald. It would help my character more.)\

According to Cenon, the bald look had long-been in her bucket list.

“It is my first time. I wanted to do it when I was pregnant but I was not allowed by Viva. So, I went for a boy cut instead. This time, I really pushed for them to allow me,” she explained.

Her shaved head also saves time on set by significantly cutting hours spent on make-up preparation.

“Mas mabilis po ngayon, lalo na may Eddie Garcia Law. Kailangan lahat mabilis so makakatulong itong pagpapakalbo ko para mag-save time,” she said.

(Everything is much faster now, especially with the Eddie Garcia Law requiring efficiency on set. Shaving my head helps save time,”)

“Kasi ang prosthetics, kung lahat kami iba-bald cap, hindi lang po mga artista, the talents also, matagal-tagal po 'yon kaya nakabawas po ako,” she added.

("Using prosthetics and bald caps for everyone, not just the main actors but all the talent, would take a lot of time. By going bald, I'm one less person to worry about”)

While Cenon admitted she was initially nervous, she has no regrets about shaving her head and is fully embracing the look.

“I was planning I will shave only when scenes my head will be seen already. But they suddenly gave a breakdown of the scenes. Salon was already closed, but I asked them to open. I rushed… on the way to the salon, I was nervous. I was hesitant but after— I cut my hair first. I also razored my hair first, it felt OK,” she recalled.=

“If you love yourself, any look, you can carry yourself,” she added.

"Lilim" marks an exciting collaboration for the Red family. Mikhail directs the film, which features a script he co-wrote with his brother Nikolas. Meanwhile, their father Raymond serves as the director of photography.

The film also stars Mon Confiado, Rafa Siguion-Reyna, Heaven Peralejo, Eula Valdez, among others.

"Mas malalim eh. Kumbaga ay very mysterious, at siyempre 'pag may mystery, may detective," Confiado said.

"And it's also important and cool na nakakatrabaho natin 'yung Red family in their first collaboration. As Filipinos meron na tayong formula, we love the love team formula which is great for us. Maganda ring gumawa ng mga ibang klaseng genre films na ibang klaseng pelikula na mapapanood," Siguion-Reyna added.
