MANILA -- The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) has warned business owners against accountants who will recommend the use of fake receipts, as the agency filed criminal cases before the Department of Justice Thursday against a trading company for over P200 million worth of fake receipts.

The BIR said the company used the fake receipts by claiming them as part of its cost of sales for the taxable year 2021.

"As early as 2023 we have warned business owners not to follow the advice of crooked accountants. The BIR will make sure you will share a jail cell with them," BIR Commissioner Romeo Lumagui Jr. said in the statement.

The BIR noted a criminal case was also filed against a tax evader and an accountant in March 2023.

"Hindi palalagpasin ng BIR ang mga negosyante na nakikipagsabwatan sa kanilang accountant upang iwasan ang pagbayad ng tamang buwis. Magsasama kayo sa kulungan. Walang lugar sa Bagong Pilipinas ang mga ganitong negosyante at accountant,” Lumagui said.
