Now that we’re in the single digits in our countdown, it’s hard to believe it’s almost JINdependence Day. True to his famous “hyung will do it first” promise, Jin, the eldest member of BTS was the first of the septet to enlist for his mandatory 18-month military conscription, entering service as an active duty soldier on 13 December 2022. To say that it’s been too long since ARMY got to enjoy the pleasure of Kim Seokjin’s presence is an understatement. So much has happened since he left, and he’ll be rejoining us in the real world very soon on 12 June 2024—the very same day the Philippines celebrates the anniversary of its own independence.

Jin in the military Weverse

Appointed a Special Class Warrior and often promoted ahead of schedule for his exceptional performance in the military, Sergeant Kim Seokjin is getting ready to hang up his fatigues, boots, and medals to become citizen Seokjin and Jin of BTS once more. We’ll have to wait a little longer to see him again—lucky ARMYs will get to see him in the flesh for 2024 Festa and the even luckier ones will get to hug him at a special in-person event—but it’s a short, short wait. In the meantime, we look back on what we miss the most about Jin and look forward to what we’ll get to experience as we wait for the boys to reunite in 2025.

See you very soon, our dear Astronaut!

His Unparalleled Visuals

There’s no need to explain why he’s known as 'Worldwide Handsome', especially when it’s backed by science. A group of Dutch visual artists from Sluis Painting Art Workshop used a combination of face mapping techniques on 43 famous faces to see which ones align most closely to the Golden Ratio of beauty—and Jin emerged as the top pick for the male category due to his nearly perfect symmetrical features. It’s almost insane how good-looking he is, and it’s all natural because he has never gone under the knife. He’s extremely forthright about it, but never arrogant. And he has all the right to because #factsonly. As the man himself once said, “The bees here just bump into me. Maybe they thought my face was a flower.” Well, you’re certainly the loveliest one, Kim Seokjin.

His Silver Voice

The Grammy nominated operatic pop and classical crossover singer Lim Hyung-ju dubbed Jin the “Silver Voice” because of his ability to seamlessly switch between his head voice and his real voice. There is also a distinctly clear quality to it: melodious, bell-like, and soothing. Listening to BTS’ discography and paying particular attention to Jin’s parts reveals how incredibly wide his range is, and its impact on the group’s varying vocal colors cannot be underestimated. We can’t wait to hear more of it when he releases his first solo album! Oh, and while we’re on the subject of his voice, we simply cannot dismiss the existence of his famous Windshield Wiper Laugh. If you’ve never heard it before, it’s the sound that comes out when you try to rub a glass pane that hasn’t completely dried up yet.

His Sense of Cunning

When asked about the members’ Hogwarts Houses, RM Sorted Jin into Gryffindor, but the Sorting Hat and the founder of Slytherin House himself would beg to argue. Plenty of ARMY become Jin biases after bingeing variety web series Run BTS, where the boys participate in various activities or challenges to win prizes and avoid consequences. If you’ve ever wanted to see the members of the world’s most famous all-male idol group betray each other over an instant ramen cooker, well, you’d better check out the show on YouTube right now. Jin has always been a good actor, and his cunning and street smarts only amplify how much of a threat he is, which is most evident in episodes where the staff plants him as a mole or a saboteur. And even when he isn’t, Jin still finds ways to come out on top and win it all, especially when the prize is getting to go home first.

His Sense of Humor

Known for his dad jokes, sarcasm, and occasional savage remarks—all done in jest and in good faith, of course—Jin is one of the funniest members of the group. He drove himself to near tears at the sight of Jungkook’s suitcase full of nothing but black clothes, teasing him about running a clothing store. A few years back, he greeted SUGA happy birthday on 31 December, which was odd because SUGA was born in March. And those of us who’ve been watching their interviews and lives have howled with laughter thanks to remarks like “I’m sorry to say this, but we’re poor,” “I have no friends,” and “I’m the only 10 here, while everyone else is an 8,” among many other iconic Jin lines. What’s sweet is that our resident mood maker is actually a shy introvert, taking the initiative to ham it up in front of the camera to make sure everyone is having a good time.

His Love for Food and Drink

Once upon a time, long before we had everything at our fingertips on Weverse, there was a mukbang show created by Jin and starring Jin—and sometimes other people—on the VLIVE platform. Jin would livestream himself trying out different recipes and enjoying all kinds of food while interacting with ARMY by answering questions and addressing comments on the chat box. Because of his love for food and culinary acumen, he often takes up the mantle of group chef during outings or whenever meals are required, a duty he shares with fellow kitchen aficionado SUGA. He does spectacularly on cooking challenges as well, catching the eye of celebrity chef Baek Jong-won, who he become good friends with after the latter appeared as a guest on a Run BTS episode. The two collaborated on the web variety show The Drunken Truth, wherein they learned how to make makgeolli. Jin proudly showed this off, alongside two other drinks he made, during his appearance on SUGA’s talk show Suchwita.

His Love for His Members

While RM takes up the mantle for business-related dealings as BTS’ leader, Jin, as the group’s beloved eldest, would often mediate between and among the members whenever problems arose in their shared dormitory. He is kind yet strict when necessary; he has no qualms pulling the hyung card on the younger ones when they need to be disciplined, especially when they’re running late for a schedule or are misbehaving in any small way. He’s always there to support them, too, and is able to anticipate their needs. For example, he once woke up early in the morning to prepare meals for RM and V, who were going on a hike. He is also famous for saying “then he flings it,” as a response to Jungkook voicing his concern about V possibly flinging the pajeon properly on the set of their reality show In the SOOP, implying that V is free to try, even if failure is a possibility. He did his best to look out for his members despite already being an enlisted soldier, using his precious days off to see each of the boys on their enlistment days, making sure no one—not even SUGA, who was only required to complete three weeks of basic training as a public service worker—would go in alone.

His Attitude Towards Life

Jin has a healthy relationship with himself and the world around him, and is very much the paragon of self-love and the pursuit of happiness. He is extremely self-aware, and seems to know very well that his confidence in his looks and abilities can be construed as conceit, but he doesn’t let it bother him for too long. He has mentioned several times that he doesn’t plan too far ahead into the future, opting to take life one day at a time. He’s perfectly okay with making mistakes, too, saying: 'When something doesn’t work out, instead of scolding yourself, say, ‘Okay, this happened this time, so next time I’ll do better. It’s okay’. There’s even a saying that failure is the mother of success. This time will be a stepping-stone for the next success. If something works out, you should say, ‘Indeed! Indeed, I did well. I’m a good person, I’m really the best’. With this mindset, I hope you all love yourself a lot more.”
