Founded by the Philippine Movie Press Club in 1985, the PMPC Star Awards for Movies is an award-giving body that recognizes exemplary work in the field of filmmaking.

“Hindi namin pwedeng palampasin ang dedikasyon ng ating mga aktor at filmmakers upang isulong ang industriya ng pelikula,” said PMPC President Rodel Fernando in his opening speech.

The 40th PMPC Star Awards for Movies was held at the Henry Lee Irwin Theatre at the Ateneo de Manila grounds last July 21, 2024. Despite the rains, the theatre was filled with stars, fans, and media who came to celebrate. The PMPC officers were decked out in ruby-colored outfits.

“Ang matingkad at makintab na ningning ng batong ruby na simbolo ng ating 40th year ay simbolo rin ng katatagan, kapusukan, galing, talento, at ningning ng ating industriya,” he continued.

The evening’s celebration was hosted by Aiko Melendez, Bianca Umali, Robi Domingo, and Alden Richards.

Robi and Alden exchanged playful banter, while Aiko and Bianca were glowing as they slayed in gowns which they changed multiple times throughout the evening.

Asia’s Pop Heartthrob Darren Espanto was joined by the Manoeuvers for the opening act.

Asia’s Songbird Regine Velasquez-Alcasid sang “You Are My Song” in honor of Viva’s boss Vic del Rosario, who was given the Ulirang Alagad ng Pelikula sa Likod ng Kamera Lifetime Achievement Award.

“After almost a thousand movies that we’ve made, magkakasama pa rin tayo. Thank you so much,” Viva’s head honcho said of Viva Films which began in 1981. He shared his award with his late wife Mina and their children.

Singer-songwriter Ogie Alcasid also performed a heartfelt song in memoriam, a tribute to members of the industry who have passed away.

In honor of Ethel Ramos, who was a former PMPC President, renowned talent manager, and "dean of entertainment press,"  the PMPC gave the Dean’s Lister Award for the first time. It was given to Ronald Constantino, and received by Nestor Cuartero.

The singing group Anthology.ph also sang a medley for the recipients of the Dekada Awards. This award is given to the top 2 actors and top 2 actresses who won the most number of acting awards in the 40 years of Star Award for Movies.

Nora Aunor and Christopher de Leon were both present to receive their awards. Vilma Santos and Piolo Pascual were the other two awardees.

The night ended with the powerful vocals of Jona, Carren Eistrup, Elaine Duran, and Lyca Gairanod, who rocked the house for the finale.

Awards for exemplary work rained down the entire evening. Several personalities were presented with special awards as well.

Alden Richards was recognized as Male Shining Personality of the Night, while Robi Domingo was awarded Male Face of the Night. Marian Rivera took home the award for Female Face of the Night, while Aiko Melendez was recognized as both Female Shining Personality of the Night and Star of the Night. Superstar Nora Aunor was named Celebrity of the Night.

Special awards called Takilya King and Takilya Queen were awarded to Dingdong Dantes and Marian Rivera, respectively, for their performance and contribution to Philippine cinema with their billion-peso earning movie, Rewind.

“Hindi lang sila pararangalan ng PMPC dahil sa more than 1 billion ang kanilang box office returns at dahil naibalik nila ang sigla sa takilya, but more than anything else, binigyan nila tayo ng pag-asa na kahit anong balakid ang meron, tuloy-tuloy lang. The show must go on,” explained presentor Gladys Reyes and Roderick Paulate.

Veteran actress Liza Lorena was also recognized and honored with the Nora Aunor Ulirang Artista Lifetime Achievement Award for her significant contribution to the industry for several decades now.

“I only hope and I pray na muling maging masigla ang ating industriya,” said Liza, who has been in the industry for 57 years now. “Sana lagi nating tangkilikin ang pelikulang Pilipino.”

Most of the names of awardees came as no surprise, as they were already released ahead of time. The PMPC disclosed the partial list of awards last July 12. Nevertheless, the advanced revelation did not take away from the excitement of the night.

Alden received the award for Movie Love team of the Year, which he shares with Julia Montes, for the movie Five Breakups and a Romance.

“Marami po itong naturong life lessons when it comes to personal life and love life,” he said.

Bong Revilla, who has already hit his 40th year in the industry, received his first-ever Darling of the Press Award.

“Espesyal po itong ‘Darling of the Press’. Why? Dahil ang mga movie press ay napakalapit po sa aking puso,” he said, attributing his and the Revilla family’s success to those who have supported them all these years. “Let’s leave a legacy for this industry.”

LA Santos and JC Santos tied for Movie Supporting Actor of the Year.

“Isang malaking karangalan po to be in the same room with the best of the best,” said LA of In His Mother’s Eyes. “I dedicate my performance sa lahat ng mga special child at sa lahat ng mga bata na nasa spectrum at sa mga nanay na may anak na nasa spectrum. Sobrang special po kayong lahat.”

“I have enjoyed acting for 18 years now, theatre and film. With this, I don’t think I’ll stop creating and telling stories,” said JC of Mallari, who also offered his award to the late Floy Quintos, Deo Endrinal, and Dodo Lim. “Surround yourself with people who believe in you, and you will create magic. Mabuhay ang teatro at mabuhay ang pelikulang Pilipino.”

The award for Movie Supporting Actress of the Year was given to Gladys Reyes, who is celebrating her 40th year in the industry, for her performance in comedy film Here Comes the Groom.

“Kakaibang saya po ang dulot ng pagkakapanalo ko sa pelikulang ito dahil challenge po sa akin ang paggawa ng comedy,” admitted Gladys, who is usually known for her villain or dramatic roles. She took the award as a reminder and inspiration that she can still excel in other genres.
