Iza Calzado reveals having parasitic disease during pregnancy

Kapamilya actress Iza Calzado revealed to her followers on social media that she had a serious medical condition during her pregnancy with her daughter, Deia Amihan. She recalled the experience and how she fought for her and her baby’s sake.

Iza contracted a parasitic disease called Toxoplasmosis which was a potential risk for her daughter if it passed through the placenta during her pregnancy. The disease could’ve lead to Deia having “brain damage, visual impairment,” and even death in some cases.

The 41-year-old actress shared that she received the unfortunate news while she was on a vacation for her 40th birthday in Switzerland. Iza shared that it was “God’s way of making sure” that she would connect with nature as she needed the “strength to face what was about to unfold.”

“On the evening of August 16, I was told that my recent test results for a parasitic disease called Toxoplasmosis confirmed that it was a recent infection and could be a potential risk for you, if it passed through the placenta,” she wrote, addressing her daughter.

Her husband, Ben Wintle, called a specialist to schedule a video call with her and discuss the possible risks that the disease could have inflicted on their daughter. She added how she had the urge to fight for the both of them after hearing what the doctor told her.

“For the first time in my life, I felt a very primal urge to fight, not only for myself, but for another human. For you, anak. I remember crying as soon as the zoom meeting was done and stepping out of the car, rushing to the edge of the mountain and, with tears streaming down my face, saying ‘No. No. No! Lalaban tayo, anak. Lalaban tayo!,’” she added.

Iza then revealed this was one of the reasons they had to stay in the UK rather than return to the Philippines due to the lack of advanced medical technologies.

“We had to stay in the U.K. because there are no advanced testing or treatments available in the Philippines. The frequent tests, the anxious waiting for result after result, the escapades to find the scarce medication, added up to my introduction to motherhood,” she revealed.

In the end, Iza bravely fought for Deia and was overjoyed after the placenta “did its job” to keep the disease away from her daughter.

“As I watch you grow into the healthy and strong baby that you are, I marvel at God’s divine timing, plan and His grace. Thank you for being one with me in that battle. We are so blessed to have you, anak,” she ended.

Iza celebrated her 41st birthday last August 12 and marked the milestone with her family as shown in her Instagram post.
