Oscar De La Hoya revealed via Instagram that he contracted COVID-19 and he won't be able to attend his boxing match with Vitor Belfort on September 11.

"Wanted you to hear directly from me that despite being fully vaccinated, I have contracted Covid and am not going to be able to fight next weekend," Oscar posted on social media.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has stated that vaccine breakthrough cases are to be expected especially in light of new variants of COVID-19. “However, there is evidence that vaccination may make illness less severe for those who are vaccinated and still get sick. The risk of infection, hospitalization, and death are all much lower in vaccinated compared to unvaccinated people,” it explained.

The 10-time world champion extended his gratitude to those who showed him support for his supposed boxing comeback after nearly 13 years.

He is currently in the hospital getting treatment.

"I am confident I will be back in the ring before the year is up. God bless everyone and stay safe," he said.

Various personalities extended their well wishes for Oscar.

"Oscar just wanted you to know that my thoughts and prayers are headed your way my friend and God bless!" Sugar Ray Leonard said.

"Get well soon my brother! Sending prayers for strength and guidance from my family to yours," Lennox Lewis commented.
