After accepting the role of a lesbian in the latest WeTV series BetCin, Kylie Padilla said she was ready to fully embrace her onscreen character who is in a relationship with Cindy (played by Andrea Torres).

“Internally, once I read Beth, I feel like I understood her. I had so much empathy for what she was going through. Off the bat, I knew how to express all her wants, needs, etc. But of course, to create a character means creating a whole person. I did a lot of research and looked for pegs for her on TV and in the movies. But I also looked for a real person that I thought would have been a great inspo for her. I found a person, talked to her and just observed how she moved, how she talked, how she dressed too. It’s always nice to observe real people because then I feel like my performance becomes more authentic,” she told PUSH in an exclusive interview.

Before accepting her first GL series project, Kylie explained that she does not distinguish between heterosexual and LGBTQIA partnerships.

“I never really had any preconceived notions on lesbian relationships. What I did notice is that their relationships are very much like all other relationships. When I read the script, the fact that they were a lesbian couple was beside the fact. They are humans going through human emotions, going through human situations. Siguro something that I overlooked is that coming out must be a very scary thing. And I commend their bravery in owning who they are fully and freely,” she said.

Being paired with Andrea Torres for the first time was not a problem with Kylie who already had good feelings about doing a project together with her.

“I knew that Andrea is as passionate in acting as I am, so I knew she would give her everything just like me; I was really excited. I could really feel Cindy’s energy in her. What surprised me was how good at comedy she is! Her comedic timing was so good. There were some scenes I really tried to hold in my laughter because she was so funny,” she recalled.

Even while shooting their kissing scenes, Kylie said she did not feel awkward doing it with someone of the same sex.

“I was so engrossed in my character that I really didn’t think anything of the intimate scenes. I just knew that I wanted to give my character justice. I went into the project willing to give it the best I could. Yes, I would do it again. Of course, it depends on the project din. I have to love the project and believe in the story it is telling,” she added.

Aside from being one of the first openly GL series in the country, Kylie said BetCin also teaches a lot about society today.

“The series shows that we have to be careful, with the fragility of social media. That communication is very important. In this day and age, we might feel like we are more connected through social media, but it doesn’t mean we don’t do the work in our relationships to help them grow outside of the limelight. Our relationships should look as good and happy in real life, not just on social media,” she explained.
