Lead stars Paulo Avelino and Charlie Dizon earned praises from the Hollywood Reporter in its movie review of Antoinette Jadaone's "Fan Girl," which recently premiered at the 33rd Tokyo International Film Festival.

Paulo was lauded by film critic Deborah Young for his "engaging if not volatile" performance as himself in the movie.

"Also remarkable is the decisiveness with which Filipino star Paulo Avelino, who plays himself, puts his name and body on the line," wrote Young.

"Though the character he plays comes across as fictional, the role involves male frontal nudity and various degrees of misbehavior that could be a cold shower (or perhaps titillating) to his rom-com fans. It is nonetheless an engaging if volatile performance, and most of the audience will side with him rather than with his perversely invasive fan," she said.

Charlie, meanwhile, had a "great naturalness" in her portrayal of the obsessed teenage fan Jane, according to Young.

"Fan Girl" made its world premiere at the ongoing Tokyo International Film Festival, which will run until November 9. It is the only Filipino movie included in the festival, and is up for the Audience Award together with 31 other international films.

A collaboration between by Black Sheep Studios, Project 8, Globe Studios, Epicmedia, and Crossword Productions, "Fan Girl" tells the story of an obsessed teenaged fan who finds herself stuck inside a mansion with her celebrity idol for one night "and learns exactly why they say never meet your heroes."

It is the latest film of Antoinette, after the 2019 romance drama "Alone/Together," which starred real-life couple Liza Soberano and Enrique Gil.

Aside from the Tokyo film festival, "Fan Girl" will also be competing at Estonia’s annual Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival this month.
