093016-BugoyDrilon2_PUSH.jpgWhen reggae singer Matisyahu saw Bugoy Drilon’s cover version of his hit song “One Day,” the American performer was all praises for the Pinoy singer, even tweeting “Wow! This dude knocks it out da park!!!”

Bugoy said he never expected to get noticed by the song’s original singer when he up-loaded the video. 'Actually kasi nakita ko yung cover na yun sa Facebook. I knew Matis-yahu a long time before pero naalala ko siya nung nakita ko sa Facebook. It’s like a video about helping each other, kung tumulong ka sa kapwa mo hindi mo malalaman yung tinulong mo babalik din sa iyo. That’s the message of that song. And then I cried. This is an old song na. So sabi ko maybe I can try to sing it,” he explained to Push.com.ph.

Bugoy revealed this was not his first time to perform “One Day” in a video. 'The first time na kinanta ko ito two years ago then another time I sang it sa isang swimming event ng MOR sa Bulacan and it went viral. I just sang because I really love the song,” he shared.

The Star Magic artist added he was very flattered that one of his music icons noticed his performance. 'Sa lahat ng mga hindi nakakaalam kay Matisyahu isa siya sa mga legend pagdating sa reggae music. So I’m so happy nung nakita niya yung kinover ko ‘One Day.’ Actually my friend shared it. Nung pinost ko siya sa Facebook my friend shared it and then Matisyahu saw it and then nag-comment siya.

“And then I checked yung page niya and then I saw my video there kasi shinare niya ala-ga dun. After that I said thank you to him. minessage ko siya na 'Thank you so much. I’m so lucky na nakita mo yung cover ko at nagustuhan mo. I’m so honored and proud.' Then sumagot siya sa akin sa direct message. Sabi niya, ‘My dude, insane. You nailed it. I’m slightly jealous.’ Sabi ko, ‘Is that really you? I can’t believe na kausap kita ngayon!’” he said.

After their exchange of messages online, Bugoy could not believe it when Matisyahu invited him to perform in a festival in California this month. “After that nag-thank you ako sa kanya and sabi niya, ‘Absolutely. Do you ever go to the states? I hope to come next year to your country and that we can sing it together. One love homie.’ And then sabi ko sa kanya I’m going there this coming October kasi may show kami nila Jovit Baldovino and KZ Tandingan for #OPMHitmakers sa October 12.

“Sabi niya sa akin, ‘What days will you be here? Can you make it earlier because I have a show near L.A on October 8. Come, sing “One Day” and “Sunshine” and I’ll back you up. Change your ticket if you can. Come early. It will be awesome. The show is called “One Love Festival in Ventura.” I searched it online and it’s a big festival so there’s a lot of art-ists there. So sabi ko, ‘My God, i’m really happy and thrilled na you want me to sing together with you! So it’s an honor. I’ll try to fix my flight. I hope I can make it sa show. it’s one of my dreams na maka-duet ka.’ Tapos sabi niya sa akin I can call him anytime so we can talk about it,” he explained further.

For his next album, Bugoy hopes he can perform more reggae songs. 'Sana. I didn’t know na pwede pala sa akin yung reggae. That’s the first time na I tried na mag-reggae na mu-sic. I’m so happy na kaya ko din pala kumanta ni-tong reggae because it’s so hard to sing a reggae song. So I’m just so happy na nakanta ko siya,” he stated.

Bugoy also hopes the Amercian reggae singer would be open to working with him in the future. 'Sana. Because I’m talking to him na directly. I have his contact. Sana we can do a collaboration together. People also don’t know that “One Day” was composed by Bruno Mars so may Filipino side pa din. May Filipino blood pa din dun sa song.”
