A flashflood triggered by typhoon Rosita damaged a major bridge in Roxas, Isabela, its mayor said Wednesday.

Rosita hit land before dawn Tuesday in the neighboring coastal town of Dinapigue, bringing fierce winds and rains that unleashed deadly landslides across Luzon and sent thousands to evacuation centers.

As the peak of Rosita's onslaught passed, floodwaters from nearby Mountain Province flowed into Roxas, eventually spilling into the main highway and damaging the Siffu Bridge that connects the town to northern Isabela, said Mayor Totep Calderon.

"Ito po ay nagsimula noong tapos na po ang bagyo kaya po kami ay talagang nagulat. Nagsimula pong lumaki ang tubig ng 2:30 [p.m.] hanggang sa noong gabi ay umapaw na talaga ang aming main highway, hanggang sa sanhi po ng pagkaputol at pagkasira ng aming main bridge," he told radio DZMM.

(It started after the typhoon so we were surprised. The waters started to swell around 2:30 until it reached out main highway, which broke and damaged our main bridge.)

"Bukod tangi po itong napakalakas ng bulusok ng tubig... May current po talaga," he added.

(The flow of the flood was extraordinarily strong. We were surprised, it really had a current.)

The flooded area, he said, has one of the town's best farmlands. There were initial reports of damage to livestock and some houses, he said.

The floods subsided Tuesday night, the mayor said.
